Bringing home your newborn is magical — and a little overwhelming. Among all the baby gear, the humble onesie (or bodysuit) will become your absolute workhorse. It’s the first layer your baby wears, the one that touches their skin almost 24/7.
But with so many options, how do you choose the right first onesie for your 0–3 month old?
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the three most common fastener types (snaps, zippers, and ties), explain why flat seams and outward labels matter, and help you avoid common newborn clothing mistakes.
Babies 0–3 months have two unique needs:
Extremely sensitive skin – Their skin barrier is still developing, making them prone to rashes, irritation, and eczema.
Frequent diaper changes – Newborns can need 10–12 diaper changes a day. Every onesie you choose should make that process quick and easy.
A poorly designed onesie can cause redness, chafing, or even a meltdown (from both baby and parent). Let’s break down what really works.
The closure style affects everything: changing speed, baby’s comfort, and your sanity. Here’s how they compare.
| Fastener Type | Pros | Cons | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snaps (plastic/metal) | Secure fit; adjustable around diaper area; breathable gaps | Time-consuming at 3 a.m.; misalignment can be frustrating | Parents who value fit over speed |
| Zippers | Super fast; one-pull opening; often have double zipper (opens from bottom) | Can bulge near tummy; may irritate chin without a fabric tab | Late-night changes and wiggly babies |
| Tie / Wrap closures | No hard parts; fully adjustable; mimics womb-like snugness | Loose strings are a safety risk if too long; less secure for active babies | Newborns under 2 months during supervised awake time |
Our verdict for 0–3 months:
A double zipper onesie (opens from bottom) is the gold standard for middle-of-the-night diaper changes. However, high-quality snap onesies with diagonal or offset snaps are also excellent because they conform better to a baby’s round belly.
⚠️ Avoid cheap plastic snaps that crack or metal snaps that get hot in the dryer.
Many parents focus only on fabric type (organic cotton is great, we’ll assume you’re using that). But two construction details are equally critical:
Traditional seams have a raised ridge on the inside. That ridge rubs against a newborn’s delicate skin thousands of times a day, often causing redness along the arms, legs, and back.
Flat seams lie completely flush against the fabric. You can barely feel them.
✅ Reduces friction and chafing
✅ Ideal for babies with eczema or even mild sensitivity
How to check: Turn the onesie inside out. Run your finger along the seams. If you feel a bumpy “train track,” it’s a standard seam. Smooth = flat seam.
Those little tags at the back of the neck are a nightmare for newborns. The scratchy edge can irritate the nape of the neck, leading to fussiness or even a small rash.
Better option: Labels printed directly on the fabric (tagless) or sewn on the outside of the garment.
Some premium brands even place size/care labels on the side seam, away from skin. Look for that.
Even with perfect seams and fasteners, the wrong fabric can undo everything. For 0–3 months:
✅ 100% organic cotton – Breathable, soft, and free from pesticide residues.
✅ Bamboo viscose – Extremely soft, temperature-regulating, but check that it’s Oeko-Tex certified to avoid chemical processing residues.
❌ Conventional cotton – Often treated with formaldehyde-based wrinkle resistants.
❌ Polyester blends – Don’t breathe; trap heat and moisture.
Option A (budget, mass-market)
Plastic snap closure (5 snaps)
Standard raised seams inside
Tag at back neck
Conventional cotton
→ Fine for short wear, but may cause irritation over a full day.
Option B (newborn-friendly design)
Double zipper (opens from bottom)
Flat seams throughout
Tagless print on fabric
GOTS-certified organic cotton
→ Ideal for 24/7 wear, sensitive skin, and 3 a.m. changes.
Buying only side-snap or envelope-neck tops – They’re good for the umbilical cord stump (first 2 weeks), but after that, a regular onesie with fold-over mitts is more practical.
Ignoring thigh snaps – Many onesies have snaps only at the crotch. Better ones have additional snaps at the inner thighs, allowing you to open the diaper area without undressing half the baby.
Choosing style over function – Ruffles, thick embroidery, or rough appliqués look cute but can rub against baby’s chin or belly. Save those for photo shoots, not daily wear.
Print this or save it for your next purchase.
Fastener: Double zipper OR quality snaps (avoid single zipper with no bottom opening)
Seams: Flat / flatlock on the inside (no raised ridges)
Label: Tagless or sewn on the outside
Fabric: 100% organic cotton or Oeko-Tex bamboo
Extras: Fold-over mitts (to prevent face scratches), inner thigh snaps, no heavy decorations
Choosing the first onesie for your 0–3 month old isn’t about fashion — it’s about comfort, safety, and making those 12 daily diaper changes a little easier. Prioritize double zippers or high-quality snaps, flat seams, tagless designs, and gentle organic fabrics.
Your baby can’t tell you what feels good. But with the right onesie, they won’t need to — they’ll just sleep, play, and grow in total comfort.
